Description

Contractors oversee the construction of buildings. They plan, budget and direct the project. Contractors are responsible for scheduling and meeting deadlines. They may hire workers and arrange for other companies to work on a construction project. Contractors work with many different people on a daily basis.

Working Conditions

Contractors are available at all times for emergencies and often work more than forty hours a week.

Salary

Contractors earn between $30,000 and more than $90,000 a year.

Helpful Skills and Subjects to Study

Skills in a construction craft, such as carpentry, plumbing or masonry is very important. Leadership and communication skills are also critical. Courses in mathematics, business, science, statistics, drafting, physics, chemistry and different shop classes are helpful.
